High School: Scholars

Grades 9–12 | Ages 15–18 | Academically Rigorous, Entrepreneurially Bold

Home Academics High School
Where Intellectual Curiosity Meets Real-World Impact

High school at American World School is not simply a bridge to university. It is a destination in its own right — four years in which students don’t just prepare for what comes next, but begin living it.

Our Scholars programme is a bold reimagining of what high school can be. Students tackle a rigorous, college-preparatory American curriculum. They pursue Advanced Placement courses in subjects they’re genuinely passionate about. They design and launch real ventures through our flagship entrepreneurship programme. They discover their voice, refine their values, and develop the academic depth and entrepreneurial confidence to make meaningful impact — in their communities, in their chosen fields, and in the world.

At AWS, we believe that the most important question a high school student can answer is not “What university will accept me?” but “What kind of person am I becoming, and what do I want to create with that?”

Our Scholars leave AWS with outstanding university acceptances. They also leave with something that matters just as much: a clear sense of purpose, the agency to pursue it, and the proven ability to turn ideas into action.

Three Principles That Define AWS Scholars

icon

Purposeful, Deep Learning Over Surface Coverage

At AWS, we are not interested in students who can recall facts under exam pressure and forget them the following week. We are interested in students who genuinely understand — who can apply knowledge to unfamiliar situations, challenge ideas with evidence, and see connections across disciplines that most people never notice. Our approach ensures deep comprehension and real conceptual mastery across all subjects.

Student Agency: Own Your Learning Journey

AWS Scholars take an active, meaningful role in designing their educational experience. This is not a passive curriculum delivered to students — it is a learning journey shaped in genuine partnership between students and their teachers. Students select from 15+ AP courses aligned with their university and career interests, pursue independent study projects, design and execute year-long entrepreneurial capstone ventures, take on leadership roles, and participate in internships with Chennai’s leading businesses and organisations.

Real-World Impact: Learning That Goes Beyond the Classroom

Through our Applied Learning Programme, every AWS Scholar engages in structured, meaningful projects that connect academic learning to real community challenges, entrepreneurial opportunities, and global issues. This is not community service as a checkbox. This is genuine, rigorous, student-designed impact — mentored by faculty, evaluated against real standards, and celebrated as the serious intellectual and entrepreneurial work it is. Students don’t just study the world. They act on it.

Applied Learning Programme

Where purpose becomes action — from Grade 9 through Grade 12

Grade 9 — Launchpad Projects

Building the Foundation for Purpose-Driven Work

Grade 9 students are introduced to the Applied Learning framework through structured projects focused on local and global impact. Working with faculty mentors, students learn to identify and frame a genuine problem or opportunity, research and analyse relevant context, design an actionable response or solution, and execute, document, and present their work. Many students are surprised by how quickly their ideas gain real traction.

Grades 10–11 — Venture Projects

Student-Designed Independent Initiatives

In Grades 10 and 11, students take full ownership of their Applied Learning journey. Venture Projects are entirely student-designed — emerging from each student’s genuine interests, questions, and emerging entrepreneurial instincts. Students may work individually or in small teams across social entrepreneurship, technology, sustainability, arts, business creation, and research. Each Venture Project concludes with a formal exhibition — a real public presentation to teachers, parents, community members, and invited judges.

Grade 12 — Capstone Venture

A Year-Long Synthesis of Learning, Character, and Entrepreneurial Ambition

The AWS Capstone Venture is the defining academic and entrepreneurial experience of a student’s time at AWS. Over the course of their final year, each Scholar designs, develops, and executes an ambitious individual project that synthesises their learning, reflects their deepest interests, and demonstrates their capacity for independent, meaningful work. This is not a school project. It is a genuine venture — intellectual, entrepreneurial, or creative — that could (and sometimes does) continue long after graduation.

Beyond the Classroom

🤝

Advisory Programme

Every AWS Scholar is matched with a dedicated faculty advisor from Grade 9 — a trusted, consistent relationship that provides academic guidance, personal support, and genuine mentorship across all four years of high school. Your advisor knows your academic profile, your ambitions, your challenges, and your character. Advisory meetings happen weekly in small groups, with individual check-ins as needed. This is not a bureaucratic process — it is a human one.

🎓

University Counselling

AWS offers one of the most comprehensive and personalised university counselling programmes of any international school in Chennai. Our experienced counselling team guides every Scholar through a four-year journey towards university success — beginning in Grade 9, not Grade 12. Our counselling team has combined experience across US, UK, Canadian, Singaporean, Australian, and Indian admissions.

🏆

Teaching Innovation Lab

One of the most distinctive features of the AWS Scholars experience — a unique programme that gives students the opportunity to design and teach their own elective course to younger students. Teaching is the most rigorous test of understanding there is. Students who can explain complex ideas clearly, engage a room, and adapt their approach based on audience response have mastered material at a level that no examination can measure.

🏅

Athletics & Arts

AWS Scholars compete, create, and perform at the highest levels our school offers. Varsity and JV teams across Basketball, Football, Cricket, Swimming, Badminton, Volleyball, Tennis, Table Tennis, and Track & Field. Performing Arts including the Annual School Musical, Drama Productions, Band and Choir Concerts, Dance Performances, and Film and Documentary Festival. Annual Art Exhibition, Portfolio Development, and Gallery showcases.

💼

Internship Programme

AWS Scholars have the opportunity to pursue structured internships with leading Chennai businesses, organisations, and startups during the school year — gaining genuine professional experience alongside their academic programme. Placements have included technology companies in the OMR IT Corridor, social enterprises and NGOs, creative agencies and media organisations, healthcare and life sciences institutions, and financial services and entrepreneurial ventures.

🏛

Student Life

40+ clubs and organisations — many founded by students themselves. Student Government leadership with real decision-making input. Debate, Model UN, and public speaking competitions at domestic and international level. Robotics, coding, and innovation competitions regionally and nationally. Frequently Asked Questions

How does AWS’s programme compare academically with other international schools in Chennai?
AWS offers one of the most rigorous academic programmes available in Chennai — AERO-aligned American curriculum, 15+ AP courses, and a college counselling team with deep expertise in global university admissions. Our Class of 2024 achieved a 100% university acceptance rate with placements at institutions including Georgia Tech, UC Berkeley, Cornell, Imperial College London, and NUS Singapore. Academic rigour at AWS is not marketing language — it is a measurable, documented reality.
My child is aiming for India’s top universities (IITs, BITS). Does AWS prepare for that?
Yes. While most AWS graduates pursue international universities, we provide specific guidance and preparation for students targeting IIT-JEE, BITSAT, and other Indian entrance examinations. Our counselling team includes expertise in both international and Indian university admissions pathways. Students can pursue both simultaneously.
How many AP courses should my child take?
This depends entirely on the student. We recommend a minimum of 3 AP courses over Grades 11 and 12, but students who are ready and motivated often take 5–8. Our counsellors guide each student towards an AP load that is genuinely challenging without being counterproductive. More is not always better — depth and performance matter more than volume.
How does the Capstone Venture work practically?
Students begin Capstone planning in the second term of Grade 11. Over the summer before Grade 12, they finalise their concept and begin preliminary work. Throughout Grade 12, they meet regularly with their faculty mentor, attend structured Capstone workshops, and develop their venture independently. The Capstone is presented publicly at our Annual Entrepreneurs’ Showcase in April of Grade 12. It is one of the most significant experiences in an AWS student’s journey — and one of the most rewarding.
Can students pursue internships during the school week?
Yes. AWS Scholars have the opportunity to arrange structured internships with approved partner organisations, typically on Friday afternoons or through negotiated flexible scheduling. All internships are coordinated through our Applied Learning team and must meet educational and safety criteria. Students who pursue internships consistently report it as among the most valuable experiences of their high school years.
How does university counselling work for international families considering non-US universities?
Our counselling team has deep expertise across US, UK, Canadian, Singaporean, Australian, and Indian admissions systems. For families considering UK applications (UCAS), we begin specific preparation in Grade 11. For Singapore and Australian universities, we advise on application requirements and timing from Grade 10. Families considering multiple country options are guided through a strategic, personalised plan that maximises options without creating unnecessary workload.
