Kindergarten — Junior Explorers (Ages 3–6)

At American World School, our youngest learners — our Junior Explorers — begin their most important journey the moment they step through our doors. Through purposeful play, hands-on discovery, and warm, structured guidance, Kindergarten students naturally build the skills that matter most: critical thinking, social-emotional awareness, early literacy, mathematical reasoning, and the creative confidence to ask “What if?”

We believe the earliest years of a child’s education are not just preparation for what comes next — they are an education in themselves. Every question a child asks, every problem they try to solve, every friendship they build, is laying the foundation for a future entrepreneur, leader, and changemaker.

Our nurturing, purpose-built environment encourages children to take thoughtful risks, explore independently, and collaborate joyfully — developing the curiosity and character that defines an AWS student for life.

The AWS Approach

Purposeful by Design

icon

Personalized Progression

Every Junior Explorer advances through learning milestones at their own natural pace, experiencing genuine challenge through a rich variety of approaches — small group exploration, one-on-one guidance, directed discovery, and hands-on projects. No child is left behind. No child is held back.

Entrepreneurial Thinking from Day One

Even at age 5, students begin developing an entrepreneurial mindset. They learn to identify problems, brainstorm creative solutions, and work collaboratively to bring ideas to life. Whether it’s organizing a classroom “share shop” or designing a solution to a playground challenge, our youngest students learn that their ideas have power.

Multiple Paths to Understanding

Every child expresses understanding differently. Some show it through drawing and building, others through storytelling, movement, or conversation. At AWS, students demonstrate their learning in ways that match who they are — not who we expect them to be.

icon

Mixed-Age Learning Community

Our Junior Explorers learn alongside and from older students, building vital social-emotional skills through natural mentorship. Older students deepen their own understanding by teaching younger peers — a practice rooted in Finnish education and proven to accelerate growth for all.

Junior Explorer Curriculum

A rich, integrated learning experience

icon

Science

In our science program, Junior Explorers investigate life science, earth science, and engineering and design through hands-on experiments and small-group inquiry. Students don’t just read about the world — they explore it directly. This approach develops scientific thinking alongside the collaborative problem-solving and communication skills every future innovator needs.

icon

Mathematics

We make mathematics real, relevant, and joyful. Through differentiated learning groups, each student receives the support they need to build genuine number sense and mathematical confidence. Students explore mathematical concepts through hands-on materials, outdoor activities, and real-world connections — counting natural objects, measuring ingredients, exploring patterns in the environment around them.

Language Arts

Strong communication is at the heart of entrepreneurship. In Kindergarten, students develop the literacy skills that will serve as their foundation for everything that follows — guided reading, phonics, spelling, sight word fluency, writing, and the joy of storytelling. Students also take part in our Reading Buddies programme with older students, building community and reinforcing skills on both sides.

Visual Arts

The arts are not an add-on at AWS — they are central to how students think and learn. Our Kindergarten art curriculum nurtures each child’s creative voice while building foundational artistic skills: cutting, painting, modelling, drawing, and working with a wide range of materials. Creativity is one of the most essential skills an entrepreneur can have, and we begin cultivating it from day one.

icon

Physical Education

Junior Explorers grow their motor skills, coordination, and teamwork through active, fun, and skill-focused PE sessions. Students learn the fundamentals of movement and apply them through games, sports, and cooperative challenges including football, basketball, and dance. Physical confidence directly supports academic confidence, and we take both seriously.

icon

Entrepreneurship

Even at age 5, students at AWS begin developing the mindset of an entrepreneur. Through simple, playful activities — designing a “classroom solution,” organising a mini sharing fair, or working together to solve a real problem in their school environment — Junior Explorers discover that their ideas have value and their actions can create change. This is where the AWS entrepreneurial journey begins.

Computer Science

Beginning in Grade 1, our computer science programme develops foundational digital literacy and computational thinking. Students explore computer systems, early programming concepts, and digital citizenship in age-appropriate ways. At AWS, we believe technology is a tool to amplify human creativity and problem-solving — and we teach students to use it intentionally, responsibly, and confidently from an early age.

Social-Emotional Learning

At the heart of the AWS Way is a simple belief: a child who knows themselves, manages their emotions, and treats others with respect will thrive — in school, in business, and in life. Our SEL programme is woven throughout the entire school day, not treated as a separate subject. Through morning circle time, collaborative activities, role play, and guided reflection, students develop self-awareness, emotional regulation, empathy, and the interpersonal skills to work with others effectively.

Junior Explorer FAQs

Common questions about our early childhood programme

At AWS, progress is measured through something far richer than a letter grade. Our teachers observe, document, and celebrate how your child applies their learning in real situations — how they use number concepts during outdoor play, whether they retell a story in sequence, how they navigate a disagreement with a friend. We share detailed, narrative progress updates that give you a genuine, nuanced picture of your child’s growth and development.
Student agency means giving your child an active role in their own learning — allowing them to make meaningful choices, set goals, and take ownership of their progress. When children experience agency from an early age, they develop crucial life skills: decision-making, self-awareness, time management, and intrinsic motivation. These are precisely the qualities that define successful entrepreneurs, leaders, and human beings. At AWS, we begin building these skills in Kindergarten.
Entrepreneurial thinking at this age isn’t about business plans — it’s about mindset. Junior Explorers learn to notice problems, ask creative questions, work with others to develop solutions, and try things even when they’re uncertain. They might design a system for organising the classroom library, create a “feelings corner” for their peers, or plan and host a simple sharing fair. These experiences teach children that their ideas have power and their actions can make a difference — which is the most important entrepreneurial lesson of all.
Children must be 5 years old by September 1st of the year they enrol in Kindergarten. For families considering our Early Years programme (Pre-KG), children must be 4 years old by September 1st. Please contact our admissions team for current availability and intake dates.
Both. Our small class sizes (12:1 ratio) and personalized approach mean teachers know each child deeply. Students who need additional support receive targeted, caring attention within the classroom environment. Students who are ready to move ahead are given enrichment opportunities and, where appropriate, may work with older students in mixed-age learning groups. No child is held back, and no child is left behind.
